India's Foreign Relationships-Overview



Since its independence in 1947, India has maintained cordial relations with most countries. In the 1950s, as India had strongly supported the independence of European colonies in Africa and Asia and a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement.  In the 1980s, at the invitation of the two neighboring countries of India, protected by the army intervened militarily in Sri Lanka and the Maldives in the second.
